LOCAL COUNCILLOR'S VOTE TO INCREASE A27 TRAFFIC

Councillor's Graham Forshaw and Brian Lynn will have the opportunity to vote on a recommendation, whether or not to proceed with three massive road schemes which have the potential to nearly double A27 traffic through Worthing.

The Hastings and Bexhill bypasses, together with the Pevensey Levels widening scheme recommendation, will be taken on February 14th during the meeting of the South East England Regional Assembly in Aylesbury. That recommendation will then be sent to John Prescott.

Following a meeting of concerned Worthing residents, a local spokesperson for SCAR said: "The feelings of the residents couldn't have been clearer; they want their elected representatives to vote against these roads. They point out the present traffic volume is already ridiculous. There is constant gridlock in the north of the town and this is now spreading up the A24 to Washington".

The spokesperson continued by saying: "The meeting also expressed great concern that the new roads might export jobs out of Hastings, already a depressed area. Then there was the damage that would be caused to some of the most beautiful countryside and best wildlife sites".

Concluding SCAR's spokesperson said: "There was some hope Cllr Forshaw might vote against due to his interest in strategic gaps and environmental issues. However we think this will become bigger than the Newbury bypass".
