PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release                                                                                  06  March 2001

Today's announcement by East Sussex County Council spokes person Catherine Field that 'some countryside around Hastings is worth sacrificing to improve traffic flows’ has been attacked by SCAR.

SCAR’s Ian Rogers said: “This irresponsible statement by ESCC will only inflame the situation. Already there are people, veterans of the Twyford and Newbury actions, eager occupy the route of the proposed bypasses".

' Clearly these veterans learned a lot from the previous occupations. Any threat to the several sites of special scientific interest (SSSI) from the roadbuilders or their promoters could see a quick response from these skilled activists. It seems there are plans for hi-tec actions as well as the well-tried tunnels and tree houses. No doubt their action will see the cost of the road spiral out of control".

Notes for Editors.

[South Coast Against Roadbuilding (SCAR) was formed in 1994, as an umbrella
group to local groups fighting the threat of more road building. Many of our
groups support non-violent direct action and were at Twyford Down, Newbury
and the A30].
