PRESS  RELEASE

For Immediate Release                                                     24 June 2001

Eco Warriors on Bypass site

Veterans of Newbury and Twyford were among the 60 anti-bypass campaigners who walked the route of the proposed Bexhill - Hastings bypass Sunday 24 June 2001.

Together with South Coast Against Roadbuilding (SCAR) were members and supporters from Hastings Alliance, The Green Party, Hastings friends of the Earth, and Earth First.

A spokesperson for SCAR said:  "The weather was perfect for everyone to view the magnificent countryside which is now under threat from this dreadful scheme. Our guides were able to point out the jewels of nature, which will be destroyed by bulldozer and concrete.

Vast areas of woodland, some of it ancient will be flattened. Views of landscapes, which are some of the most cherished in southern England, will be destroyed by a monstrous motorway on stilts running above it. Acres of land which is supposed to be protected form schemes such as this due to its special scientific importance will be buried under tons of steel and concrete."

Finally the spokesperson added:  "It beggars belief how anyone could even think of laying a cycle path across this jewel of English countryside let-alone a motorway.

Any government which gives the go-ahead for these bypasses will be branded by this and future generations AS WANTON VANDELS."

Notes for editors.

A decision on the bypasses is expected in the next 2 weeks. The activities of anti-bypass protesters at Newbury and Twyford caused delays and increased construction cost.

South Coast Against Roadbuilding (SCAR) was formed in 1994, as an umbrella group to local groups fighting the threat of a superhighway along the south coast.
