Strange how history has a habit of repeating itself, today it's Sunday, 28 September 2014.
But back in 2003, when the bypass of the Arundel bypass was last on the wish-list of those who can only think of building more roads to ease congestion, the route of their preferred scheme was last walked. This page is a revisit of that earlier walk, and later how today's walk went.
Magnificent in all their glory how could anyone risk irreparable damage to the largest block of ancient woodland on the costal plain, yet this is what could happen if the West Sussex County council, local MP's and local big business get there way.
As can be seen above, their preferred route would see the A27 sweep under and on from the present diversion at Crossbush and over the Arun Valley on a viaduct similar to the below.
What this image fails to do is show is that this structure is as high as a 30 story block of flats with 4 lanes and 90 feet wide. Not only will the glare from the lighting columns will be seen for miles the serious traffic noise will be amplified even more by the shape of the valley
Back in 2003 about 40 set off from Arundel high street with a police escort -yes they really did - the reason will become clear later. Today's walk was better attended with about 100 and proceed along the river bank to where the road on stilts crosses the river and all could visualise the sheer horror if this thing gets built.
Thankfully little had changed in the woods, even this sign was still in the same condition it was back in 2003 and I was amazed to find the wooden bridge further on was still there.
However what shocked me was what WSCC did to the camp protectors had set up on the line of the road route following the abandonment of the 2003 plan.
Yet they arrived with chain saws and ran amok even felling a century's old oak - the evidence is still there today.
I mentioned that the police had escorted the 2003 walk, well they soon ran out of puff and gave up. However we thought they were worried we were going to join the woods protectors at their camp. The image above is a rope ladder to a tree house.
I wonder how many of those 2003 walkers above are still going to object again?
To be continued.
